The Materials Map is an open tool for improving networking and interdisciplinary exchange within materials research. It enables cross-database search for cooperation and network partners and discovering of the research landscape.

SLUB Dresden develops the tool on the basis of the open source software VIVO. Various open databases have been integrated, e.g. ORCID. If you miss your profile or have suggestions, please write to us at materials.science@slub-dresden.de.

Materials Map under construction

The Materials Map is still under development. In its current state, it is only based on one single data source and, thus, incomplete and contains duplicates. We are working on incorporating new open data sources like ORCID to improve the quality and the timeliness of our data. We will update Materials Map as soon as possible and kindly ask for your patience.

About the Materials Map

Collage with several materials

The Materials Map is an innovative tool aimed at improving networking within materials research as well as the interdisciplinary exchange. The Materials Map is based on openly available metadata on researchers and on their research output coming from various data sources and enables cross-database, subject-specific searches for cooperation and network partners in the fields of materials research. Using the Materials Map can be done via the following search options:

  • Topics: The thematic visualization gives an overview of connections between research areas. To use this option, klick on the topic you would like to get information about. Researchers who have dealt with the topics will appear on the people list below.
  • Locations: Find possible local cooperation partners and get an insight into the geographical distribution of certain research topics by searching through the location-based option.
  • Searchbox: Here you can filter by various criteria, e.g. Topics, Locations, Names and Institutions.

All search options are interconnected and filter the number of relevant researchers in the results list.

Data sources

The Materials Map currently includes professionally curated database sections from the following databases as data sources:

  • BASE - Bielefeld Academic Search Engine

The underlying vocabulary is based on:

  • Medina-Smith, Andrea and Becker, Chandler (2017): Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) version of Materials Data Vocabulary. National Institute of Standards and Technology, https://doi.org/10.18434/T4/1435037 (Accessed 2022-03-31)

If you are missing some data, we would like to appreciate

  • your suggestion of further data sources or
  • that you provide us with your ORCID number and please ensure that the data there is up to date.

In both cases, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Delimitation of content

The Materials Map does not aim to catalogue the research output or to explicitly present researchers. For this reason, it makes no claim to completeness of the contained information. The Materials Map is made for the search of persons whose research location is in Europe. For the sake of actuality, only data that is not older than the year 2000 is taken into account.

Technical implementation

The Materials Map is based on the open source software VIVO which provides the data as Linked Open Data (LOD) using various globally established ontologies and standardized data formats. On the one hand, this enables the use of an open and community-driven development of the data schema. On the other hand, the information is semantically explained and machine-readable without any further development services. To learn more about the concept and the technical background, you are welcome to read this article The Mobility Compass - A VIVO-based approach for exploring interdisciplinary research networks or get in contact with us.
