Filtration-UV irradiation as an option for mitigating the risk of microbiologically influenced corrosion of subsea construction alloys in seawater
Abstract
The corrosion potential of several offshore structural steels and nickel alloys was measured in natural coastal seawater in a continuous flow system for 90 days. In the presence of biofilms, the electrodes potential ennobled approximately +400-500 mV relative to the initial Ecorr (Ag/AgCl). Biofilms induced localized corrosion on some alloys by shifting Ecorr into a critical potential for localized corrosion. Ennobling biofilms were composed of microbial cells, diatoms and extracellular polymeric substance and differed in their structure and bacterial diversity among materials. Results are explained on the basis of the potential-temperature dependence of alloys on the onset of localized corrosion.
