Manufacturing and characterization of thermoplastic nanocomposite fibers with carbon nanotubes
Abstract
The intense progress in the field of nanomaterials contribute to search repeatedly novel combinations between the various classes of materials. As a result the nanocomposites are obtained that is two component system where in the matrix at least one dimension of the filler is located at the nano-scale.The object of our study are nanocomposites consist of thermoplastic polymer matrix and carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a filler. The method of manufacturing includes, first of all, the homogenization process of carbon nanotubes with polymer, then extruding the fibers from the previously made pellets using the laboratory twin screws mini-extruder HAAKE MiniLab (Thermo Scientific). Due to even a slight addition of carbon nanotubes into the polymer melt, the viscosity of the mixture significantly increases what could considerably hinder the processing methods. Hence, some attempts were made towards diminishing the stickiness of nanocomposites mainly by changes in their rheological behavior. In order to produce fibers, the extrusion parameters for each composition were firstly adjusted and then optimized according to the stock of the filler and type of polymer. As a matrix the polyamide PA 11 and three types of co-polyamides with various melting range were selected. We managed to obtain the fibers (from 30 to140 µm) containing MWCNTs from the range of0.1% - 10 wt.%. The resulting material, both pellets and fibers, were measured using the DSC and TGA analysis. Additionally, the tensile tests were done, and microscopic observation were carried out with the application of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). It was observed the uniform distribution of MWCNTs in a polymer matrix without the presence of agglomerates. Melt rheological behavior of nanocomposites were investigated using an ARES rheometer as well as with utilize the MiniLab software program.
