Investigation of the Properties of S i C based Ceramic Slurries and Shell Moulds Cooling using Thermal Imaging Camera
Abstract
Silicon Carbide is a very pr o spective material in modern precision casting. SiC ischaracterized by a higher thermal conductivity than the commonly used powders , i.e. Al 2 O 3 ,aluminosilicates and ZrO 2 Also a n interesting aspect is the application of a binder containingfibers, which increase s the gas permeability of ceramic shell mo u lds. The paper presents the resultsof a research of casting materials in the delivery state. The article discusses the results ofinvestigations performed on a power and a binder in the delivery state as well as the properties ofmoulding sands. The main component of the ceramic mixtures was silicon carbide with the meanparticle size of 21.8 μ m. The morphologies of the pow d er and the binder were exa m ined o n a ligh tmicro s cope as well as a scanning microscope ( The obtained casting slip assigned for the firstlayer of the mould had the vi s cosity in the scope of 29 21 s , and that for the constru ction layers inthe range of 17 12 s. The e valuation of t he properties of the samples concerned the cooling of theSiC specimen , which w as investigated with the use of a therm al imaging camera. It has been shownthat the use of temperature field measurements with a therm ovision camera is an interestingsolution for the evaluati o n of the cooling processes of ceramic shell mo u lds.
