Cement concrete and concrete-polymer composites: two merging worlds A report from 11th ICPIC Congress in Berlin, 2004
Abstract
The International Congresses on Polymers in Concrete (ICPIC) organises practitionersand scientists, dealing with concrete-polymer composites in all industrial fields, but withemphasis on construction industry. The 11th ICPIC took place in Berlin, 2-4th June 2004.New trends and evolutions have been presented and discussed. The highlights of theCongress, and the synergies that emerge from the congress for the construction world incombination with cement concrete, will be discussed in this paper. One of the research topicsof the 11th ICPIC is the modelling of the microstructure building of concrete-polymercomposites. The integrated Beeldens-Ohama-Van Gemert model for microstructure buildingin polymer cement concrete is presented. Other promising research topics are the study ofmortars modified with water-soluble polymers and hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars. Atthe 11th ICPIC, a lot of new applications of concrete-polymer composites are proposed, e.g.,the use of preplaced aggregate epoxy concrete for the structural enhancement of deterioratedbeams, the use of polymer-modified porous cement mortars as sound absorbing materials, thereuse of glass waste in polymer mortars and the polymeric impregnation of textile rovings intextile reinforced concrete to improve the tensile strength and strain at failure.
