Wear and corrosion resistance of diffusive layers produced on a titanium alloy by glow discharge surface treatments
Abstract

The IBSD method permits producing a carbon coating on the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, an alloy commonly used in medicine which was previously subjected to glow discharge carbonitriding. The diffusive carbonitrided layer has a great hardness and a good friction and corrosion resistance at it is a very good support for NCD coating. This coating has a fine-crystalline structure, shows good adhesion to the substrate, and improves the corrosion and frictional wear resistance of the alloy. The coating contains both diamond and graphite phases, with the share of the former phase being about 60%.
