Abstract

This work presents the spatiotemporal evolution of the mechanical characteristics of the Ozigo wood beam (Dacryodes buettneri) subjected to nine years of creep in an unsheltered outdoor tropical climate. These beams were sawn into nine sections of 340 mm in length and subdivided into three portions in the direction of height (upper, middle and lower). From each portion, two flexural, two tensile and four compression specimens were extracted. The present study concerns the 108 compression test pieces with a cross-section of 20 x 20 mm 2 and a length of 120 mm. Longitudinal compression tests yielded the modulus of elasticity and failure stress. There is a decrease in stiffness of about 60% and 56% of the stress due to the combined effects of mechanical loading and environmental variations. This work highlights the thermo-visco-hygro-mechanical effects on a wooden structure exposed in an unsheltered outdoor tropical environment.
