Electrochemical behaviour of Ti-6Al-4V alloys manufactured by different methods for medical applications
Abstract
The corrosion characteristics of the Ti-6Al-4V alloys manufactured by selective electron beam melting (SEBM), SEBM plus hot isostatic pressing (HIP), selective laser beam melting (SLM), SLM + HIP, casting, mill-annealing and spark plasma sintering (SPS) were evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization tests in Hanks’ Solution at 37oC. The microstructure were characterized with optical microscope and XRD. The corroded morphology and constituent composition were characterized by SEM with EDX. Although the same alloy composition was used, the samples have significantly different polarization responses, which were highly related to their different microstructures. The single α՛ phase sample fabricated by SLM exhibit the best corrosion resistance compared to the other dual α+β phases samples, while the SPS and the cast sample exhibited the lowest resistance to Hanks’ solution.
