Heat transfer modeling in fused deposition techniques
Abstract
The performance in service of parts produced by fused deposition techniques, such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Free FormExtrusion (FFE), may be restricted by poor bonding between adjacent filaments. This work presents a model for transient heat transfer during filament deposition, which involves the resolution of the energy balance equation taking into account all the relevant contacts between filaments as the deposition takes place, coupled to a healing criterion. It is then shown that this tool can be used to estimate the influence of the main process parameters on adhesion and thus assist operation set-up or optimization.
