Making spin-orbit coupling visible in single layer ferrimagnets: direct observation of spin-orbit torques and chiral spin textures
Abstract
We demonstrate that effects of spin-orbit coupling and inversion asymmetry, spin-orbit torques (SOTs), Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and chiral magnetism, can co-exist in a single layer ferrimagnetic GdFeCo without any heavy metal interface. We unambiguously measure net damping-like and field-like SOTs. We quantify the DMI (D=0.008 mJ/m2) and we observe the resulting chiral magnetic textures. In a similar film capped with Pt, we retrieve the well-known interfacial effects. These additional internal SOC effects open a new path to design efficient spintronic materials.
