Forging Activities in Jaffa during Ottoman Palestine
Abstract
Within the framework of research on networks of iron exchange in the Mediterranean area, this article presents an analysis of forging wastes from two workshops of the Palestinian city of Jaffa during the ottoman period (end of the 18th / beginning of the 19th century). the results of a metallographic study are presented here and used to suggest that the metal worked in these two workshops came from both the import of metal from indirect reduction and, in a larger proportion, of metal from recycling. this hypothesis comes to confirm the situation of a supply dependent on european traders, in particular the French. this pressure on resources would have urged the craftsmen of Jaffa to develop innovative techniques to recover the maximum from the metallic waste, even the fragments of cannonballs made of cast iron.
