Relation between microstructure and mechanical properties of set plaster
Abstract
Set plaster is commonly used in buildings, as coatings or ready-made units. Its good thermal and acoustic insulation properties, as well as a great lightness, make this material particularly adapted to an indoor use. Few papers have been published on the mechanical behavior of set plaster, only the strong influence of porosity is well established. This work aims to study the mechanical properties of set plaster in relation to its microstructural characteristics. Microstructure of set plaster is a complex entanglement of gypsum crystals. A numerical model is developed to describe the material. Estimation of elastic properties from this model, using a finite element method, is in very good agreement with the experimental results. Mechanical behavior of dry set plaster is linear elastic. However, a crack propagation study shows the existence of energy dissipative mechanisms in the material. A crack propagation model is developed, based on the crack interaction with the various elements of the microstructure, to explain the measured behavior. Influence of water on set plaster is considered in the last chapter of the thesis. Water uptake reduces the mechanical properties of set plaster, by decreasing the quality of intercristalline bonding. Original internal friction measurements allow the characterization of slip between gypsum crystals, explaining the non-linearity of the mechanical behavior of wet plaster. The sensitivity of the material strain to the test speed is interpreted using a micromechanical model for the contact zone.
