On the use of mechanical and hydraulic methods for differenciating between bentonites
Abstract
Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) can be used in landfill bottom liners. In these conditions, the material may be exposed to leachate. Depending on the bentonite saturation, the leachate could more or less modify the hydraulic conductivity of GCL. An efficient method to differentiate the bentonite type is thus required. Several oedopermeameter tests and filter press tests show similarities between the hydraulic conductivity of the natural sodium bentonites and the activated calcium bentonites. As the low hydraulic conductivity of the bentonite originates from its structuration, rheometric methods that are mechanical methods very sensitive to the structuration, were used. The viscosity and the yield stress determination also allowed differentiating natural sodium bentonites from activated calcium bentonites.
