On the mobility of flowing papermaking suspensions and its relationship to formation
Abstract
The mobility of flowing papermaking fiber suspensions has been characterized indirectly by measuring the changes in paper properties in a novel laboratory handsheet device. For the conditions tested, properties such as formation and fiber orientation were observed to change significantly when the ratio of the yield stress of the suspension to the energy dissipated by the fluid, defined as k in this work, exceeded k=0.01. In subsequent work, changes in formation were measured as a function of k on both an experimental pilot paper machine and on 18 different industrial machines. Formation was found to diminish at an approximately constant level of k. This implies that it may be possible to optimize paper machine operation to a greater degree.
