Development and demonstration of concrete for investigative deep borehole sealing at Olkiluoto nuclear repository site
Abstract
Flowable low-pH concrete was developed and demonstratedfor closure of site investigation boreholes. Theboreholes have been used during geologicalcharacterization of the nuclear spent fuel disposal siteat Olkiluoto, Finland. Posiva Oy has over 60 deep coredboreholes of varying diameter (typically 56 to 76 mm) andat lengths from 200 to 1200 metres deep. Two holes weresealed in 2016 using materials developed in VTT'slaboratories. The low-pH concrete needed to have highworkability for casting emplacement to a 1000 metre deephole and high long-term durability with low hydraulicconductivity. The results are being used for licenseapplications to Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority ofFinland, to show compliance with repository safety.
