Abstract

Rising fuel costs, increased environmental regulation and a greater ecological awareness of<br/>consumers lead to intense efforts of the automotive industry to develop and manufacture fuel-<br/>efficient and low emission vehicles. Improvements in engine and propulsion system and the<br/>reduction of overall vehicle weight are therefore subject areas in which in recent years, many<br/>activities have been set. Accordingly, there is a growing interest in magnesium which, compared to steel and aluminum is much lighter. In contrast to magnesium die castings, which can be found for quite some time in the series production were magnesium sheet due to the high production costs and low ductility below 225°C, which has a negative effect on the production of parts and the joint suitability, not yet applied. The latest technical and price developments, however, lead to the fact that Mg-sheets now for lightweight vehicle concepts are interesting.<br/>In this work the suitability of joining dissimilar AZ31 Mg sheets with AlMgSi aluminum sheets was examined. Here, the MIG (CMT) welding, friction stir welding and self piercing riveting procedures were investigated. The properties of the manufactured joints were characterized in static tensile tests, metallographic investigations, EDX-analyses, microprobe as well as corrosion tests. Hence important insights were gained about the suitability of dissimilar joining of magnesium sheets
