Petrographic and petrophysic characterization of the granite applied for the Senhora da Conceição church (Porto) [Caracterização petrográfica e petrofísica do granito aplicado na igreja da Senhora da Conceição (Porto)]
Abstract
The problem of the conservation of the natural built heritage is a contemporary and important issue. The present study consists on the characterization of the granite applied in a monument of the Oporto city, the Senhora da Conceição Church, in order to show how geological materials contribute to raise the public awareness of the importance of urban geology and the local stone as an invaluable architectural and cultural heritage. In geological, petrographic and petrophysical characterization of the Porto Granite used for the construction of the Senhora da Conceição Church two samples of the two types of granite used in the building have been studied under the polarized light microscopy and tested for ultrasonic velocity, point load as well as for the uniaxial compressive strength. The petrographic analysis revealed effects caused of hydrothermal and meteoric alterations with the presence of secondary minerals and intra and intergranular fractures. Petrophysical results yield values that help to distinguish the two types of granites from each other. © 2014 LNEG - Laboratório Nacional de Geologia e Energia IP.
