Multiaxial creep testing device for nuclear fuel claddings
Abstract
Mechanical properties and creep resistance are among thekey issues in the selection of fuel cladding materialsfor future Gen-IV nuclear reactor applications. As fortoday's nuclear reactors, the Fukushima accident hasincreased the interest in accident-tolerant fuel claddingmaterials. Thin-walled fuel cladding tubes may exhibitanisotropic creep properties due to the manufacturingprocess. A newly developed Pneumatic Loading Apparatus(PLA) is capable of testing the multiaxial creepproperties of thin-walled tubular specimens with internalpressure and an additional axial force. Because of itsinnovative design, the PLA is moveable and can beimplemented in testing in extreme environments. Thesystem functionality and accuracy was demonstrated by twobiaxial creep tests performed on austenitic stainlesssteel DIN 1.4970 and E110 zirconium alloy specimens. Bothmaterials showed anisotropic creep behavior and the PLAtesting concept and equipment proved its capability toperform reliably and accurately biaxial creep testing offuel cladding materials.
