Chalcogenide glass microspheres and their applications
Abstract
Glass microspheres with diameters ranging from 500 nm to 500 microns have been fabricated from chalcogenide glasses. The glasses, based on gallium lanthanum sulphides are readily doped with high concentrations of rare earth elements. Quality factors of greater than 10,000 have been measured and laser action in neodymium-doped spheres demonstrated. Evidence for non-linear effects is also observed. These simple compact lasers have extremely low thresholds and are attracting interest as another building block in photonic circuits.
