Resin-based dental composites for tooth filling
Abstract
Since the introduction of direct resin composite in the mid-1950s, there has been a driving force toward progressive development of such materials. The growing esthetic demands with conservative approaches led to a great shift toward the use of resin composite in various restorative procedures.<br/><br/>Resin composite main constituents are resin matrix, reinforcement fillers, silane coupling agent, initiator–activator system, inhibitor, and optical modifiers. Properties of dental resin composite are dictated by the influence of each of these components.<br/><br/>Different shortcomings of dental composites are still raising concerns of researchers and clinicians and keeping room for continuous enhancement. The main drawbacks of resin composite materials are polymerization shrinkage, technique sensitivity, wear, discoloration, and cytotoxicity.<br/><br/>This chapter will discuss the different classes of resin composite restorative materials regarding their composition, properties, and clinical applications. In addition, the recent compositional and manipulative modifications aiming to improve success and durability with less technique sensitivity will be reviewed.
