Microstructural evolution of titanium under twist extrusion
Abstract
<p>We present some experimental results describing microstructural evolution in commercially pure titanium during severe plastic deformation by twist extrusion (TE). In particular, we show that increasing the number of TE passes leads to the decrease of the grain size d in both orthogonal and parallel cross-sections of the work piece. For example, if in its original state titanium has d ∼ 25 μm, then after three TE passes, we already have d≤1 μm. Our experimental results show that TE followed by annealing leads to high anisotropy of titanium mechanical properties, which is most likely due to the texture of work pieces. At the same time, the tensile strength, yield stress and plasticity of the specimens fabricated by cross-cutting the work pieces are very high.</p>
