Investigating the effect of process parameters on residual stress evolution in plasma transferred arc (PTA) cladding for additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V
Abstract

The evolution of residual stresses during Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) cladding of Ti-6Al-4V was investigated. The PTA cladding was used as an Additive Manufacturing technique to build parts in a layer-by-layer fashion. The process parameters were therefore defined based on the PTA cladding and AM process. Moreover, in-situ phase transformation of the Titanium alloy were studied to understand the microstructural changes and the impact on residual stress evolution. A series of results from two residual stress measurement techniques as well as phase transformation data could provide a baseline to understand the effect of this metal-based AM technology on geometrical accuracy of the PTA AM components.
