Materials for small wind turbine blades
Abstract
Renewable energy sources play a significant role in meeting the increasing power demand across the globe in various aspects. Solar and wind energy are the major renewable energy sources available in abundance. Wind energy has become more popular than solar energy because of its compatible cost with conventional energy sources. Large wind turbine technology has reached a peak in the market. Small wind turbine market is growing slowly and demands reliable and durable technology. Blade and generator are the key elements of small wind turbines. Many researchers are working to enhance reliability and performance of blades and generators. Performance of wind turbine blade is dependent on profile and blade material. Selection of blade material is important in designing the wind turbine blade. Wood, metals, glass fiber reinforced polymer, carbon fiber reinforced polymers, natural fiber reinforced polymer, and nanocomposites are the various materials available in the market for small wind turbine blade. These materials have different properties. This chapter presents detailed Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threat (SWOT) analysis of the materials available in the market.
