Materials Map under construction

The Materials Map is still under development. In its current state, it is only based on one single data source and, thus, incomplete and contains duplicates. We are working on incorporating new open data sources like ORCID to improve the quality and the timeliness of our data. We will update Materials Map as soon as possible and kindly ask for your patience.

Characterisation of mono- and biphasic calcium phosphates granules

Abstract

In the present paper 3 different materials, hydroxyapatite (HA), biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) were synthesised and processed into granules. The granules had different size ranges (212mum-500mum, 500mum-1mm and 1-2mm), with comparable morphologies and microstructures but with different phase compositions. The granules were characterised using surface area analysis (BET), XRD, XRF and SEM. XRD patterns showed that both FLA and beta-TCP granules were single phase with no additional phases present, whilst BCP was approximately a 50:50 biphasic mixture of RA and beta-TCP. The granules were then soaked in deionised water and dilute acetic acid solution for different time periods to investigate how the phase composition affected their solubility. The dissolution behaviour of BCP granules was more comparable to single-phase HA that to beta-TCP. The SEM analysis revealed that calcium phosphate crystals were deposited on the surface of the granules as the soaking times were increased.
