AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTERFACE BEHAVIOUR OF AN ALUMINIUM/SILICON CARBIDE FIBRE METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE
Abstract
The interfacial behaviour of an aluminium/silicon carbide fibre composite under tension has been investigated, with an overall goal to develop the material system into a viable light-weight structural material for space-launch vehicles.
The fibre-fragmentation process of Al/SiC coupons, composed of a single SM3256 SiC fibre embedded between as-received 6061 aluminium foils was examined. The samples were loaded in tension incrementally, and analysed by radiography and x-ray diffraction in-situ to reveal variations in the fibre strain.
It was seen that the strain in the fibres post-fracture followed the expected partial debonding model. Within this context, a qualitative comparison with other MMC systems is presented, and an outline for further developments for high-performance Al/SiCf composites.
