Performance Tests of Plastics-based Cladding Profiles
Abstract
Plastics play an important role in façade applications and are used either as pure polymers or as part of diverse compounds. Our contribution in “Profiles 2017” will present latest research findings at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, Division Composites in the Building Envelope. Firstly, results from a meta-analysis in the scope of compound-formulations are introduced where durability aspects of PVC-containing composites in cladding are of paramount interest. It was found that PVC revealed much better durability resistance in façade-oriented weathering trials compared to PP. Secondly, we will illustrate how performance tests for plastics-cladding according to ETAG034 and ASTM E72 should be carried out and we will present results from a multi sampling where pure PVC-profiles were tested against Wood-PP-Composite cladding. Here we demonstrate that a profile`s performance depends essentially on the profile design and less on the compound itself. Finally we will summarize the key findings as basic input for cladding developments.
