Risk assessment in processing polymer nanocomposites
Abstract
The present investigation is aimed at studying the safety assessment in the processing of polymer nanocomposites with focus on control measures for nanoparticles exposure in work environments. The " new" qualitative analyses are discussed and the feasibility of the application of the particles assay standard to nanoparticles is evaluated. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis based on methodologies ISPESL of NanoSafe Nanotool was applied and direct measurements were performed in order to allow the issue charac-terization under the regulatory parameters. A medium risk was obtained in all qualitative methods. As regards to quantitative analysis, obtained results by direct measurements did not exceed or even reach the statutory limit values of safety in Portugal. Obtained results highlight the inefficiency of the existing quantitative meth-odologies for the assessment of safety risks involved in the processing of nano based products. The safety as-sessment criteria must be revised in order to fill the existing gaps.
