The influence of temperature and strain-rate on PLC-effect in Al-Mg alloy
Abstract
The aim of the present work is to examine the presence of Portevin-Le Châtelier (PLC) effect on an AA5754-O aluminium alloy, in function of temperature and strain rate. Therefore, monotonous tensile tests were carried out from room temperature up to 200°C, at a wide range of strain rates, from 4x10-4 s-1 up to 2x10-2 s-1. These tests were performed in a Gleeble machine and the strain field was measured using a stereo-optical strain measurement system. The results show that the PLC effect clearly depends of strain rate and temperature conditions. For a temperature of 100ºC, the PLC phenomenon occurs for all strain rates values tested, while it is not visible for a temperature of 125°C and a strain rate of 4x10-4 s-1. Also, for a temperature of 150ºC the effect is not observed for a strain rate lower or equal to 2x10-3 s-1. These observa-tions suggest that, in the framework of drawing process, the formability of this alloy could be improved for temperatures higher or equal to 125°C. In these conditions, the 5000 series (Al–Mg) alloys could replace more expensive 6000 (Al–Mg–Si) alloys.
