Disinfection by-product degradation in distribution systems
Abstract

The results of past and ongoing research to investigate disinfection byproduct (DBP) degradation in distribution systems will be discussed. Two projects nearing completion (one funded by AwwaRF and one funded by the National Science Foundation) were performed to investigate abiotic DBP degradation pathways and kinetics, with particular emphasis on the role of iron metal and iron corrosion products, as iron pipes are commonly found in distribution systems in the U. S. and elsewhere. In addition, a new AwwaRF project is underway to investigate the biodegradation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in distribution systems. The experimental approach includes relatively simple glass bottle batch experiments, batch experiments in novel pipe reactors, and a survey of water utilities.
