Out of the blue and into the black - silica fibers for the mid-IR
Abstract

Silica is generally the material of choice for optical fibers, but its transparency drops catastrophically for wavelengths beyond 2.5μm. We describe silica fibers with hollow cores that can transmit to almost 5μm wavelength with low attenuation.
