Infrared and Raman spectroscopy of refractory residues left over after ion irradiation of nitrogen bearing icy mixtures
Abstract
We have studied by infrared spectroscopy the evolution of the 2165 cm-1 absorption feature formed after ion irradiation of icy mixtures at low temperature (10-16 K). We have considered mixtures made of H2 O, CO, CH3 OH, CH4 , N2 and NH3 . These mixtures have been irradiated with 30 keV He+ and Ar+ ions and 60 keV Ar++ ions. In the infrared spectra, a feature appears at 2165 cm-1 after ion irradiation of all mixtures studied. After warm-up this feature shifts to lower wavenumbers and it is still present in the refractory residue left over at room temperature. After further irradiation of the residue at room temperature the intensity of the abosrption feature decreases. Raman spectroscopy of similar mixtures has shown that ion irradiation causes a modification of the structure of the samples which evolve towards an amorphous carbon....
