Microcracking of Non-Crimp Fabric composites under hygrothermal aging
Abstract
Research has increased in the development of new families of multiaxial composite materials to meet high performance criteria such as strength and durability. The last decade has seen the emergence of a new generation of composite materials of the Non-Crimp Fabrictype (NCF). These are materials consistof multiaxial non-woven reinforcements, and stitchedwith textile yarn(Polyester or Polyamide). This specificity has been developed on these materials to improve their properties but also to adapt them to innovative manufacturing processes. On the other hand, the presence of stitching yarn in these composites induces a specific morphology imposing a new approach to the study of durability. In this study, composites are subjected to accelerate hygrothermal cycles containing prior relative humidity conditioning and a thermal loading block causing microcracks in specific resin-rich regions. A microcracksdensity variable based on a 2D observation method was used to involve the microcracks during the applied cycles. The characterizations of morphologiesallowing the initiation and development of cracking havebeen carried out.
