Wettability of Water- and Solvent-borne Epoxy Coatings on Contaminated Steel Substrates
Abstract
This study aims to understand the wetting mechanisms of water- and solvent-borne epoxy coatings on steel panels contaminated with oil or flash rust. To assess the wettability, surface tension theories, in combination with static contact angle measurements and theoretical and real roughness-corrected work of adhesion, were used. The liquid surface tension components and the contaminated solid surface free energies were determined using the Owens, Wendt, Rabel, and Kaelble (OWRK) approach, as well as the acid-base theory.
