Synthesis and electrochemical properties of highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon for improved supercapacitor performance
Abstract
Nitrogen is introduced in bulk network of carbon aerogels as heteroatoms from polymeric precursor containing nitrogen; melamine was used as nitrogen sources incorporated into the polymer matrix using the sol-gel process.

To analyse the effects of nitrogen on the morphology, surface chemistry and electrochemical properties, the carbon aerogels were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, contact angle measurements, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements.

The experimental results reveal that resorcinol/melamine (R/M) ratio plays crucial roles in the formation of porous carbon with variation in specific surface area (SSA), pore size (PS) and capacitive performance. The nitrogen doping profoundly improves the wetting behaviour and specific capacitance (SC) of the porous carbon. The sample MRFC-100-800-R/M 100 exhibits much higher capacitance of 198 F/g nearly 45% higher as compare to un-doped carbon.
