Electrospun sheet materials from CA, PES and PLLA as supports for ALD coating
Abstract
Electrospinning is a method that can be used in theproduction of polymeric nanofibres. Polymer solution isdrawn into sub-µm to nanosized fibres utilizing electricfield. The structure of electrospun web has intrinsicproperties such as small fibre diameter, small pore size, and high specific surface area which are beneficial forvarious applications. In addition, fibres can befunctionalized in various methods. Thin (nm scale),conformal coatings made by atomic layer deposition (ALD)can be used for functionalization. For example, metaloxides can provide interesting properties, such aselectronic, antimicrobial, self-cleaning and hydrophobicproperties among others, to fibrous materials. Combiningelectrospinning and thicker ALD layer enables alsopreparation of sub-µm tubes, if core fibres are removed.Aim of this work was to make electrospun fibres fromthree polymers, cellulose acetate (CA), polyethersulphone (PES) and poly-L-lactide (PLLA) to be used assubstrates for ALD. In this presentation we will reportpreparation electrospun fibres using solvent mixtures, structure of electrospun sheets (PLLA shown as anexample), and preliminary results of ALD carried out onelectrospun sheets, as well as discuss the possibilitiesof ALD method in functionalization and processing ofelectrospun fibres.
