EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF CLINCHING PROCESSES FOR CPP COATED THIN STEEL SHEETS
Abstract
This research presents an experimental and numerical study of clinching process and the mechanical strength of clinched joints of different surface conditions (bare, electro
galvanized, corrosion protection primer (CPP) coated. The investigated CPP coating is a Zn-pigmented corrosion protection primer as already applied in the automotive industry.
The experimental results show no relevant effect of CPP on the punch force- displacement curves. The mechanical strength of the clinched joints are analysed by means of shear and cross
tension tests. Fracture force-displacement diagrams of clinched joints are plotted and the fracture force for CPP coated surfaces is even slightly higher than of galvanized coated sheets. Finite
element analysis (6.6.ABAQUS) is used to model the clinching process as well as the subsequent loading of the joint, to consider the residual stresses.
