Emulsions as precursors for structurized inhalable microparticles
Abstract
Preparation and properties of dry emulsions (powders) as possible carriers of inhalation drugs were investigated. Powders prepared by spray-drying of O/W emulsions (soy bean oil, aqueous solution of lactose, sodium casenaite and leucine) were characterized using SEM technique. It appeared that the obtained particles were polydisperse (14-10 µm) and deformed. Aliter powders resuspension in inhaler, aerosol particles typically formed aggregates, and only one type of powder can be considered as suitable for pulmonary drug delivery. Reconstituted O/W emulsions obtained by powder rehydration were characterized by smaller oil droplets than the initial emulsions, what suggests the additional disintegration of emulsion droplets during atomization in the dryer.
