INJECTION OVER-MOLDED POLYCARBONATE-ALUMINUM COMPOSITE STRUCTURES
Abstract
Hybrid joints of polycarbonate (PC) and aluminum alloy 6061-T6 were produced by
injection overmolding and the effects of laser structuring of the metal part on the polymer-metal shear strength were addressed. The laser scanning configuration was set to produce trenches with a width of 45 μm spaced 100 μm apart with their axes aligned perpendicularly to the mold flow direction. The trench depth and recast material height varied according to the laser parameters. Within the laser
structuring conditions studied, PC/AA6061 hybrid joints with ultimate lap shear force of up to 2300 N by an overlapping area of 12.7 x 24.8 mm2 were obtained, with ductile failure of the PC part next to the metal-polymer overlapping area.
