A Structural Study of the Hydrated and the Dimethylsulfoxide, N,N’-Dimethyl-propyleneurea, Acetonitrile, Pyridine and N,N-Dimethylthioformamide Solvated Nickel(II) Ion Solution and Solid State
Abstract
The solvated nickel(II) ion is octahedral in aqueous (Ni-O bond distance 2.055(2) Å), dimethylsulfoxide (Ni-O 2.062(2)), acetonitrile (Ni-N 2.064(2)) and N,N-dimethylthioformamide (Ni-S 2.454(2)) solution. The permittivity of pyridine is too low to allow dissociation and tetrakis(pyridine)nickel(II) complexes with counter ions completing the octahedral configuration or mixed pyridine/water solvates are formed instead. The N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea solvated nickel(II) ion is five-coordinated due to the bulkiness of the solvent molecule, with a mean Ni-O bond distance of 2.000(2) Å.
