Sequence of precipitation of sigma phase in CoCrCuMnNi High Entropy Alloy
Abstract
In the perspective of designing high entropy alloys (HEAs) for structural applications, sigma phase is important. It is generally known to be embrittling phase, but, there are studies which show its beneficial effects in mechanical performance. It is reported to appear in several HEAs. In the present study, CoCrCuMnNi alloy is chosen, in which sigma phase appears at 800°C. The present study aims at understanding the evolution of this phase so that its presence can be controlled. Arc melted alloy is heat treated for different times from 1 to 48h at 800°C. XRD, SEM and TEM analysis are carried out to study the sequence of precipitation. In the present work, sequence of precipitation of sigma phase CoCrCuMnNi alloy is studied at 800°C, with variation of heat treatment time from 1h to 48h.
