The effect of hydrothermal pre-treatment on the chemical characteristics of the xylem of silver birch
Abstract
In plywood industry hydrothermal pre-treatment process is commonly used in order to soften the log surface including the bark and increase the peelability of the peeling process of the log. It has been clearly confirmed that the temperature of the pre-treatment influences the physical properties of the rotary-cut veneers in several different wood species. It is suspected that accumulated dissolved substances in the water for the pre-treatment may induce discoloration reactions on the veneer surface. This study particularly focuses on understanding the chemical characteristics of the xylem of silver birch during the treatment and the possibility of the water penetration to the xylem of the birch log.
