Abstract
M e t a l s u p p o r t e d p r o t o n i c f u e l c e l l s ( P C F C ) o f f e r o n e m a j o r a d v a n t a g e o v e r s t a n d a r d s o l i d o x i d e f u e l c e l l s ( S O F C ) w i t h o x y g e n c o n d u c t i n g e l e c t r o l y t e s , n a m e l y t h a t t h e p r o d u c t , w a t e r , i s p r o d u c e d o n t h e c a t h o d e ( a i r ) s id e . T h i s f e a tu r e s im p l i f i e s t h e e n g i n e e r i n g o f t h e s t a c k , b o o s t s e f f i c i e n c y , a n d i s p a r t i c u la r ly h e lp f u l f o r a p o r o u s m e t a l s u p p o r t e d c e l l b e c a u s e i t l im i t s t h e c o r r o s i o n o f t h e m e t a l b y e x p o s u r e t o w a t e r v a p o r in t h e a n o d e g a s . In t h i s w o r k , w e s h o w t h e e f f e c t o f c o m p o s i t i o n a n d m i c r o s t r u c t u r e o n t h e h i g h t em p e r a t u r e c o r r o s i o n a n d p h a s e s t a b i l i t y ( f o rm a t i o n o f s i g m a p h a s e /L a v e s p h a s e ) o f p o r o u s a l l o y s . A l l o y s in t h e c o m p o s i t i o n a l r a n g e F e - 2 0% C r t o F e - 3 2% C r w e r e e v a lu a t e d a n d t h e e f f e c t s o f s u r f a c e m o d i f i c a t i o n o n c o r r o s i o n r e s i s t a n c e w e r e s t u d i e d u s i n g t h e r m o g r a v im e t r y , x - r a y d i f f r a c t o m e t r y a n d e l e c t r o n m i c r o s c o p y . T h e r e s u l t s s h o w th a t s u r f a c e m o d i f i e d p o r o u s f e r r i t i c s t e e l s a r e v e r y p r o m i s i n g m a t e r i a l s f o r c o s t e f f e c t i v e p r o t o n i c f u e l c e l l s o p e r a t in g a t 6 0 0 ° C .
