Co-digestion of biowaste and sewage sludge under meso- and thermophilic conditions
Abstract
The number of applications for utilizing biogas for powerproduction has grown significantly in recent years. Animportant factor relating to the economical profitabilityof biogas to electricity is to ensure good technicalfunctionality. This has created significant concern aboutthe presence of siloxanes and other trace components suchas halogens and sulphur compounds in the gas. They causedamage such as fouling and corrosion in the biogasutilization equipment. The cost of converting biogas intoelectricity from municipal digesters and landfills can beadversely affected by these contaminants. This paperdescribes a method for on-line measurement of the totalbiogas matrix and presents the results of on sitemeasurements of trace compounds in biogas and landfillgas at several sites in Finland. Furthermore itsummarizes useable methods for siloxane abatement frombiogas and gives an overview of the costs of biogaspurification relating to electricity productionapplications. It will outline considered cases in detailwhere the economy of the installation and operation ofsiloxane removal equipment is compared to the costs ofintensified service and repair of a biogas engine orturbine when using biogas containing selectedconcentrations of siloxane and sulphurous compounds.
