Preparing nano structural WC-Co powders by utilizing soluble raw materials by spray drying and synthesis method
Abstract
Thermal sprayed carbide such as WC-Co(Cr) and Cr3C2-NiCrcoatings are well known and widely used for wearprotection purposes. Submicron, nano-sized and multimodalcarbides in cermets have shown promising results ingaining hardness and wear performance. Presented study isa part of the research aiming to create a novel powdermanufacturing route for homogenous nano structuralWC-Co(Cr) powder for thermal spraying by utilizing watersoluble raw materials. One major challenge for thismanufacturing route is to produce dense and sphericalpowder structure by spray drying method which duringsynthesis stage will conserve shape even if desired phasestructure will form. In this study powders weremanufactured via spray drying method from water basedsolution with raw materials ammonium meta tungstate (AMT)as a tungsten source, glycine as a carbon source andcobalt acetate as a cobalt source. Before the spraydrying stage additives were added to experimentalsolutions to modify solution properties. Solutions werecharacterised by rheometer and in addition pH-value wasmeasured. Also the effects of spray drying parameters topowder form and particle size was analysed. After spraydrying powders were heat treated in Ar atmosphere. Themorphology and internal structure of powder particle sizewas analysed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) bothafter spray drying and heat treatment stage and an X-raydiffractometer (XRD) was used for phase structureanalysis. With modifications on solution by additives andon spray drying parameters powder particle size, shapeand density could be improved but still particle shapewas not conserved during the heat treatment stage.
