Synthesis and photoluminescence characteristics of Al2O3 thin films doped with (Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+
Abstract
Al2O3 condensed solutions were synthesized by a nonaqueous sol-gel process using aluminium isopropoxide as precursor, anhydrous ethanol as solvent, nitric acid as catalyst, and acetylacetone as chelating agent [1]. Orange to red-emitting (Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+ particles were prepared by a solvothermal route which yields monodisperse, single crystalline particles with typical size between 0.5 and 2µm [2]. For practical use, the stability of these sulfides in the presence of moist air is limited. Hence a coating of the particles and/or an incorporation in an inert thin film is preferred. Although a sol-gel process is an attractive route for this purpose, a non-aqueous synthesis method is required. Regarding the choice of this matrix material, it should be thermally and chemically stable, and also be transparent to the excitation and emission light of the incorporated particles.(Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+ particles suspended in ethanol were mixed into a viscous Al2O3 gel. It was observed that the (Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+ particles were reasonably stable in the gel. A silicon substrate was then coated with this mixture using spin coating followed by calcination at 500oC in air. The luminescence and structural properties of these (Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+ doped Al2O3 thin films were investigated. For the case of SrS:Eu2+ doped Al2O3 thin films, a broad emission band at 616nm was observed in photoluminescence, which is the same as the emission band ofbulk SrS:Eu2+ [2].The morphology of the particles and the distribution in the Al2O3 matrix was studied with scanning electron microscopy. Elemental mappings (using EDX) were correlated with spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence mappings. Degradation of sulfide particles could be monitored by the presence of a violet emission band, typical for Eu2+-doped sulfates. Finally the stability against hydrolysis of the (Ca,Sr)S:Eu2+-doped Al2O3 thin films was evaluated.
