Porous Ti-6Al-4V bone replacement materials produced by Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
Abstract

A way of manufacturing biomaterials that enables manufacturing of parts closer to net shape with pre designed macro-porosity channels as well as residual micro porosity to enable bone ingrowth and improved fixation was developed. The experiments were carried out by producing green parts on a DTM 2500 Selective laser Sintering Station (SLS). Tensile tests were performed to establish the effect of sintering temperature. It was found that the scope for material application is possibly directed towards non-load bearing bone replacement areas such as maxillofacial applications, finger or shoulder areas which would all gain from improved fixation.
