Abstract
This work presents an evaluation of the effects of increasing limestone additions in obtaining a manganese flux on the composition of the weldmetal deposited by submerged arc welding. The limestone was added maintaining the MnO/SiO ratio of the flux oxide system constant. As a result of an increase in basicity the thermodynamic activity of the MnO increased while that of the SiO2 decreased, contributing to the transfer of Mn to the deposited metal and reducing the transfer of silicon, sulphur, phosphorus and carbon remain basically invariable. With this, it is possible to use a wire with low manganese content during submerged arc welding of low alloy steels.
