Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine criticalproperties of wood fuels in respect of power plantavailability, to determine the optimal conditions forreducing detriments, and to study the effect of storingand processing of wood fuels on the boiler operation. Both, the circulating (CFB) and bubbling (BFB) fludizedbed technologies were studied. The project started inDecember 2000 and it was ended in March 2003. Experts atVTT Processes carried out the ma-jority of the researchactivities. System Technology Laboratory of OuluUniver-sity was responsible for the power plantautomation and for the research on boiler controltechnology. Co-operation related to the analytics of heattransfer surface deposition and corrosion with the EU'sJRC has continued as established in the Combustion ofForest Chips -project but mainly in a so-called"CORBI"-EU-project. Additionally, VTT co-operated withSwedish Värmeforsk Ab in the form of information exchangeon experiences of wood fuel utilisation in Swed-ish powerplants. The following companies participated in theproject: Etelä-Savon Energia Oy, Foster Wheeler EnergiaOy, Kvaerner Pulping Oy, Simpele pasteboard factory ofM-Real Oyj and Värmeforsk Ab (Sweden).
