Materials Map under construction

The Materials Map is still under development. In its current state, it is only based on one single data source and, thus, incomplete and contains duplicates. We are working on incorporating new open data sources like ORCID to improve the quality and the timeliness of our data. We will update Materials Map as soon as possible and kindly ask for your patience.

Comparative Study for Different Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foams for Cool Box Application

Abstract

This study investigates the comparison of different XPS (XPS Jakadour and XPS Ravago) in terms of their mechanical properties (compressive strength, moisture resistance, thermal conductivity). The main objective for this study is to obtain the best XPS grade that would suitable for cool box application and to identify the mechanical strength, moisture resistance and thermal conductivity for each XPS grade. By using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) under maximum compression force of 10 kN, a compression test was conducted on both materials based on IS 4671:1984. The water absorption test based on the EN 12087:1997 and thermal analysis method also has been performed for comparative studies. Experimental results of both materials were compared and analysed to determine the best XPS for cool box applications. XPS Ravago can be considered as the best material for cool box application since its compressive strength (44.036 kPa) is higher and the water absorption rate (0.3636%) is lower compared to XPS Jackadour. It was also observed that a minimal thermal conductivity rate difference (14%), which XPS Ravago is slightly lower than XPS Jakadour, still makes it acceptable since it posses all the requirements needed for cool box application. Thus, it can be concluded that XPS is a suitable material for a longer cool box life span with good thermal insulation criteria and it is also would be beneficial for associate companies/industries to perceive this study as their product guidance
