Abstract
My research interests are focused on the identification of microstructural probes governing the functional properties (mechanical, permeability...) of amorphous polymers. The microstructure of aromatic polyimides is described on different scales through density measurement, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), UV-Visible spectrophotometry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and positronium annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Thus, from these experiments, there are only three extracted probes i.e. temperature of the gamma relaxation, the colour index and the radius of the spherical free volume holes which displays strong relationships with gas transport properties. My research project deals with the interest of the positron annihilation spectroscopy technique installed in our lab in the study of other polymer properties. One application of the research background is to define microstructural probes for understanding the degradation of a perfluorinated sulfonic acid membrane used as a polyelectrolyte in a fuel cell.
